CCTV Has Not Cut Crime
Source: Times Online
Billions of pounds spent on Britain’s 4.2 million closed-circuit television
cameras has not had a significant impact on crime, according to the senior
police officer piloting a new database.
Detective Chief Inspector Mick Neville said it was a “fiasco” that only 3 per cent of street robberies in London were solved using CCTV.
Mr Neville, who heads the Visual Images, Identifications and Detections Office (Viido) unit, told the Security Document World Conference that the use of CCTV images as evidence in court has been very poor.

Did Obama Return All the Rezko Cash?
Presidential candidate Barack Obama claims to have returned all the tainted money associated with a jailed financial supporter charged with corruption, but the Illinois senator’s figure doesn’t account for more than $50,000.
Indicted for extortion, influence peddling and conspiracy, Chicago businessman Antoin Rezko is a longtime Obama backer who has given the Illinois senator at least $200,000. After being indicted for plotting to squeeze millions of dollars in kickbacks out of firms seeking state business, Obama decided to distance himself from the shady businessman.
Obama reluctantly gave $77,335 that had been donated by Rezko to charity and the senator severed ties with him as his February 25 federal trial approached. Rezko, also a big contributor to Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, is also charged with taking $10.5 million from a large company through fraud and swindling of group investors.

George W. Bush: Presidental Approval
"Information is moving -- you know, nightly news is one way, of course, but it's also moving through the blogosphere and through the Internets." -- George W. Bush
The war in Iraq continues to drag Bush down. A record 73 percent of Americans disapprove of the job Bush has done handling Iraq. Despite “the surge” in U.S. forces into Baghdad and Iraq’s western Anbar province, a record-low 23 percent of Americans approve of the president’s actions in Iraq, down 5 points since the end of March.
But the White House cannot pin his rating on the war alone. Bush scores record or near record lows on every major issue:
- from the economy (34 percent approve, 60 percent disapprove)
- to health care (28 percent approve, 61 percent disapprove)
- to immigration (23 percent approve, 63 percent disapprove).
"They misunderestimated me." -- George W. Bush
